The Perfect Question to Ask God

So, let's say you have 20 minutes with your favourite spiritual teacher, guru or God. What would you ask them? We often think that we are supposed to ask some great philosophical question that will change the course of our lives. But this isn't true. There are stories about people travelling to the remotest places to find the wise man who can help them find their answers. When they arrive, they ask some grand philosophical question and of course the answer is just as grand, and simple, and not at all the answer that they were looking for. Because they are asking the wrong questions. Your Question Must Come from Your Present Reality This present moment is an eternal moment. Whatever we are dealing with in our lives in this moment is just as profound a challenge as the greatest philosophical problem you can describe. The [...]

What If We Actually Choose our Struggles?

Life can be hard sometimes.. like really, really hard. Some believe that it's because of bad luck or just a rotten hand dealt to them. Life is just hard and there's nothing we can do about it. But then, some say that our soul chooses our journey before we come in. We choose our parents (even if they are abusive), we choose our circumstances and everything about who we are here. (This is obviously a really tough philosophy to swallow in many situations.) Personally, I don't know how it works. In fact, I don't even think we are capable of understanding how it works. We can hear ideas that sound like truth to us. Or they make sense. But in truth, we don't know how it works. The question is, how does the philosophy we believe in change how we live? How does it change how much hope we have? The [...]

Loving Raising My Children

My name is Katrina Bos. I have two children: my son is 21 and my daughter is 19. And since the day they were born, they just took my breath away. I know that children are born every day. It's normal. Maybe I'm weird. Maybe I have weird karma. I don't know. But from the moment they were born, I would look at them and I just couldn't believe they were there. I couldn't believe that they were part of my life. It's hard to explain without sounding really corny. But I just have always really appreciated them. Now don't get me wrong. There have been tough times... My son was colicky. He cried nearly non-stop night and day for his first eleven months of life... I'm not saying that I was always so grateful during all those moments... But these are the times that (once long over and [...]

Being the Person Your Kids Can Count On

What is our ideal role as parents? What if it isn't what we've been taught? What if it isn't to be the disciplinarian - keeping them in line. Or the one who "molds them into model citizens". What if our ideal role is to be the safe person in a crazy world, that they can count on when they need it? About 10 years ago, I found myself driving a sixteen-year-old daughter of a close friend of mine home after she had been babysitting my kids. Somehow, we got on the conversation of sex... and somehow I ended up asking her if she had had sex yet. She looked at me aghast and said none-too-forcefully, "WHAT? Of course not! As if I'd have sex without talking to my mom first!" "WHAT?????????????????" is what rang in my head!!!!I couldn't believe it. What teenager would EVER talk to their parents about [...]

Being Honest with our Teens

We all want to have great relationships with our kids. But what about our teens? How do we connect with them? One of the biggest problems is that most of the time we are lying to them about the topics that they are struggling with the most - sex, alcohol, peers, drugs, etc. This video is all about how to be honest with them and how to access our own wisdom that we gained through our experiences so that we can help our kids... and so that they feel safe to confide in us so we have a chance of actually helping them through these tough years! (This video references "East Street Station". This was an old train station that Katrina has renovated into a wellness centre in Goderich, Canada where she taught yoga, meditation, tantra and many other wonderful things.)

Parenting as a Mystic

They say that becoming a parent should come with an owner's manual. But what if we have something better? What if we actually have perfect guidance available to us in every moment, and it's completely unique to the child and situation? My children are now grown - my son is 21 and my daughter is 19. But I still remember staring at each of their little faces when they were born and being in complete awe that they had been "given" to me to raise and be part of my life. With this responsibility came the great fear - what if I screwed up? What if I said the wrong thing? What if I did the wrong thing? What if I transferred my issues and challenges onto them? What if they would be lying on a psychologist's couch one day saying, "Well it's because my mom did this and that....". [...]

Releasing the Past for Good

As I watched the building being demolished, it reminded me of what it feels like when we need to let go of old "constructs" that are no longer serving us, that we've grown from, or that simply were a part of a past. I share my ponderings as we watch the old being demolished.. making way for something new!

Rumi: Why We Have Hard Times

Sometimes life is so hard. We ask ourselves "Why is this happening?".. We wish things were different, or had gone differently.. And there times where we have real "dark nights of the soul" where everything that we once believed doesn't make any sense and we don't know what to do next.. Nothing makes any sense any more. And when we only focus on the physical world, the world of material things, the world of our roles in society, what we are "supposed" to be doing, how we are supposed to feel and how we think/hope/wish things were going, we can end up in real despair.. But what if there is other purpose to these hard times? What if there is a honing of our lives? What if there is something much greater going on? Rumi was a great mystic.. So his desire was to experience the divine in life.. To [...]

Wisdom Beyond the Veil

Behind all of these teachings there is something that lies "beyond the veil". For all of the years that I have taught yoga, meditation, spirituality, tantra, etc I have always struggled with talking about the concept of God or spirit into my teachings. Mostly because I didn't want the words to offend anyone. I didn't want anyone to turn away because of it. And this is because I believe that if discussing this topic separates us, then we aren't discussing it correctly. Because we are all the same. We all have flesh and we all are energy as well. It isn't that some of us are connected to God/spirit and others aren't. We are all the same... And all of these teachings depend on the idea that we are more than flesh and blood.. that we are more than our looks, our jobs, our status in the community, how many [...]

Your Dreams Never Give Up on You

You know those dreams and hopes that just don't go away? Well, they aren't going anywhere. They will stay with you until… well.. until they happen. :) Sometimes it's easy to lose hope that our lives will ever turn out the way we want. We know what we want. Or we know how we want to feel. But the world of responsibilities and "life" seemed to take over somewhere along the way and we feel like actually creating a life of freedom, happiness and ease is just not going to happen for us. But here's the good news!! Our inner spirit never gives up!! Why?  Because this is the energy that makes us ALIVE! This is the creative force inside of us that is dying to experience this amazing world. And no matter how many jobs and dishes and obligations we put in front of that, that amazing energy will keep [...]
